Eb Bass – Dave Yates

Being from Reading originally, I feel very proud to be playing for a local band as good as Saints and I am very much enjoying the challenge of playing solo Eb Bass in the second section.

As a teenager, I played with Berkshire Young Musicians Trust (BYMT – now called Berkshire Maestros) and played in every one of their Brass Bands, ending up in the top band – Holst. During my 18 months or so with Holst I helped them to the National Festival of Music for Youth finals and enjoyed a successful tour to Germany before leaving to go to University. Having not played at uni, and really missing being with a band – I checked out the local wind and brass bands as soon as I got home. I soon joined Trinity Concert Band and started to dep for other bands when asked. After a while, I joined Pangbourne Silver Band and played with them for around 18 months as well as Trinity and found myself rapidly improving and in need of a new challenge.

I joined Saints in 2010 after a bit of pressure from friends already in the band and soon found myself at home both musically and socially. I love the continual challenges thrown at us and am proud when I look at how much I have improved whilst I have been here – I know this has been noticed as I was awarded ‘Musician of the Year’ in 2011 for the improvement in playing that I had made.

Most memorable playing moment …
Playing at the Royal Festival Hall in the National Festival of Music for Youth finals with Holst Brass Band at the age of 17.

Proudest banding moment …
Helping Saints to best ever regional’s finish in 2012 and performing in the National Festival of Music for Youth finals.

Previous bands …
Pangbourne Silver Band
Trinity Concert Band
BYMT youth brass bands

Favourite piece …
Like a lot of bass players – if it’s not jazz or swing or too quick, I’m happy !!!

Musical ambition …
Just to enjoy playing and keep on challenging myself to play progressively more difficult music. Would love to play at the Royal Albert Hall one day. Would be nice to make it through a rehearsal without Lee shouting at the section one day!
